Lead climbing is the goal toward which every new climber strives. It puts you on the sharp end making decisions and taking calculated risks, but requires a critical skill set to make the experience safer and more enjoyable.
Onto Stone offers two types of lead climbing courses- sport climbing and traditional climbing. We recommend taking our basic anchors course first if you are not familiar with setting up and breaking down bolted anchors.
Our Sport Lead Climbing Course covers assessing a climb for safety, reading a climbing topo, how to clip and unclip a bolt (and common errors), safe body position while clipping, lead belaying, fall safety, and allows plenty of time for mock leading with feedback and instruction.
Our Traditional Lead Climbing Course covers assessing a climb for safety, reading a climbing topo, placing gear (cams and stoppers), assessing gear placements, safe body position while placing gear and clipping, fall safety, and allows plenty of time for mock leading with feedback and instruction
Our small class sizes provide ample direct supervision, time for questions and troubleshooting, and opportunities for repetition in practice to give you the chance to get the skills wired.
